ARISS

Coastal Community School spoke Astronaut Suni Williams on the ISS this Fall 2024!

Watch our conversation with Suni Williams HERE

Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) seeks schools and organizations to have contact with ISS astronauts via radio to further education and interest in STEM and radio science technology.

The direct line of sight from the ISS to any location in the world is roughly only ten minutes at a time, which means we will only have a ten-minute window to speak with the ISS astronauts. Typically, schools get to ask 14 to 20 questions in this window of time.

How will we pick students?

  • Interested students will submit an application.
  • A panel of CCS staff will select students based solely on the quality of the answers provided in the application (student names will be hidden during the selection process), with at least one student per grade selected.
  • 14 students will be selected to read the school's questions live via HAM radio directly to an astronaut aboard the ISS.
  • ALL Coastal students and families will be invited to hear from the astronauts!

What day will this happen?

There are many factors that impact the day and timing of their availability. For now, we know that it will most likely be the last week of October 2024. We will send updates as we learn more!
