Frequently Asked Questions
So how does the "hybrid" model work?
Once enrolled, your child is a registered student of "Coastal Community School," which is included in the Florida Department of Education Directory under "Private School Code 7508." Therefore, you do not have to enroll in a homeschool, umbrella program. Coastal Community School is a five-day school program with instruction at school and at home. Your child will participate in a classroom setting three full days per week (Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday) in grades VPK-8. On home days, your child will receive instruction at home by a parent. A full week of lesson plans is provided by your child's classroom teacher in order to guide instruction at school and home.
What is home school vs. home instruction?
In traditional homeschool, parents take the lead in choosing the curriculum and educating their children on their timeline, and in the subjects that they choose. In Coastal Community School’s hybrid model, parents play an important role, partnering with highly qualified staff to educate their children. Coastal Community School will choose the curriculum. Parents agree to follow the timeline for completing assignments with their children. It is the responsibility of the parents to make sure their children are completing the assigned work for home instruction days. This includes teaching, tutoring, and sometimes grading work on those days.
Which Step Up for Students scholarship should I apply to?
Your first resource should always be www.sufs.org with scholarship questions. They have an updated handbook on their website for each scholarship. Coastal Community School students are eligible to apply for the Personalized Education Program (PEP), a reimbursed-based scholarship that allows the parents to choose which expenses they want to be reimbursed for. See SUFS purchasing guide for a list of items that can be reimbursed. Please watch closely for scholarship application deadlines and note that new recipients typically do not receive funding for reimbursements until September of their first year in the PEP program.
What are the tuition and fees?

What curriculum do we use?
The curriculum is selected to transfer well from school to home and home to school. The curriculum utilized in elementary school includes Saxon Math, All About Reading, Shurley Grammar, BJU Science, BJU Heritage Studies, Core Knowledge Social Studies, IEW Writing, Fix It Grammar, Classical Literature, and more. The curriculum utilized in middle school (grades 6-8) includes, Positive Action for Christ, Saxon Math, BJU Science, ACSI Science, Civics and American History, IEW Writing, Fix It Grammar, Classical Literature, Spanish is Fun, and more.
How long does school take on a home instruction day?
Homeschooling times vary depending upon several variables, such as your child’s motivation, temperament, academic level, etc. Keep in mind that as children get older, the workload increases but can be completed more independently. It is not necessary or desirable for parents to sit with their child the entire amount of time they are working (except possibly in Kindergarten). The following serves as an estimate of the amount of time it may take a child to complete the day's homeschooling work:
Kindergarten: 2 – 2 ½ hours
1st Grade: 2 ½ - 3 ½ hours
2nd Grade: 3 – 4 hours
3rd Grade: 3 ½ - 4 ½ hours
4th Grade: 4 – 5 hours
5th Grade: 4 ½ - 5 ½ hours
6th - 8th Grade: 5-6 hours
Do you have standardized testing?
In the Fall and Spring, students participate in NWEA MAP® Growth™ assessments. MAP® Growth™ measures what students know and informs what they’re ready to learn next. By dynamically adjusting to each student’s responses, MAP Growth creates a personalized assessment experience that accurately measures performance. MAP Growth student reports also present realistic learning goals by subject areas so that, through a teacher’s guidance, students can individually see their progress and be inspired to take charge of their own learning.
What is "accreditation" and why does it matter?
Coastal Community School is currently accredited with Christian Schools International and Florida Coalition of Christian Private Schools Accreditation. Accreditation ensures accountability for high standard academics, a spiritually focused environment, and operational integrity. Transferring from an accredited institution indicates that students are ready to practice at a certain level.

Do you serve lunch?
Students bring their lunch. At times, we work with local vendors and parents can pre-purchase a lunch for their student. Our school has a NO NUT policy for lunches and snacks.
Do you have a dress code?
We feel that a school uniform helps not only to easily identify our students while on campus and on school field trips, but also keeps their attention on their purpose while at school - to get a quality education. CCS students are required to wear a collared shirt with the Coastal Community School logo and chino bottoms. The outermost layer of clothing must have the logo showing.
CCS has an account with Lands End clothing to facilitate this process. Please visit Lands' End and search for Coastal Community School to see color and material options.
How do I volunteer?
All staff and volunteers (i.e. parents) are required to have a current background screening. Our school resource officer assigned from the Brevard County Sheriff's Office conducts background screening for all of our parents before school begins.
